On a recently inspected Storax system, it was found that a local maintenance fundi had, amongst other things, welded all the axle plates to the wheel unit fabrications. This is like someone driving is Porsche Cayenne around Cape Town who hears a rattle coming from his exhaust. Seeing a pair of ramps under a tree by the side of the road manned by 2 guys with a cutting torch he drives the Porsche up the ramps and tell them to fix it. Wouldn’t you think the Porsche driver was mad? If you do, just remember that your Storax system cost a lot more than a Porsche and makes you money rather than being just a depreciating asset. Isn’t it worth looking after properly?

Barpro took this step after Barpro Freezer Wear stopped producing cold store suits about 18 months ago. In order to match Pamela’s super quality we have tied up with Delf in the UK who ironically provided the original specs and training all those years ago and who have produced a high quality freezer suit to exacting European standards for generations.

To complement the suits we have also ordered some hats, gloves and boots. Rosetta is looking forward to keeping you warm.

For those who dont like doing proactive maintenance on the Storax mobiles, just listen to this horror story. Last year after a Storax inspection a customer was told that an electronic component was acting up and needed to be changed. The cost was below R5000. No order was forthcoming. In November on a Monday morning with a new client in the room, the component gave up the ghost. Result? an unhappy customer. Lots of trucks lined up in the road. Additional costs to get the component there and fitted. The supervisor had to pull an all nighter to catch up and then had a vehicle accident on the way home. He ended up in hospital.
I dont think a final cost was ever put to this crisis but can guarantee that it was considerably more than the original component. We at Barpro are trying to stop this sort of thing from happening. But clients must help us by asking us to do inspections and then carrying out the repairs that are suggested. Lets face it if you take your car in for a service and you get a call to say that the brake pads are shot, how many of you will refuse to change them?

Getting a proper inspection done costs money. Then, when you get the report, you kind of know that there will be repairs to be done that will suck the life out of your maintenance budget. So why bother?

This trip bar has been hit and needs urgent attention

Storax mobile racking is designed to last under reasonable conditions. The first system installed in South Africa was still going strong more than 20 years after it was installed. There are systems in Europe that have been operating well for over 30 years.

But these systems have been looked after. Time has been made to service and maintain them even when the cold store is busy. The floors are kept clean, the pallets are properly stacked and the forklift drivers do not drive into the bases.

I sometimes make the comparison between mobiles and cars. Most car owners take their cars to a garage for services. It is understood that if the oil isn’t changed sometimes the engine will eventually seize. Mobiles are different only in the fact that the garage has to come to them for obvious reasons. But servicing is essential.

If regular maintenance is not done, the system eventually stops working, or works badly. This frustrates the operators who then find ways of getting to product by overriding or dismantling the safety features, by jamming contactors or by doing a whole host of other undesirable things. These innovations then degrade the system further and the vicious cycle continues.

This Storax panel has been vandalised.
It needs urgent attention

Eventually, when a repair quote is received from Barpro, the cost is high. This encourages the local maintenance team to attempt the repairs themselves. With respect, most of these repairs only make the situation worse as all the implications are not fully understood.

Don’t get me wrong, we don’t mind operators doing their own repairs. So long as they have been properly trained. In fact, we have developed training courses for onsite maintenance staff, but very few companies ask for presentations. We have also developed training courses for operators which we give to staff when a system is commissioned. But operators come and go and often we come across situations where operators do not know how the mobiles are supposed to work. Indeed an untrained operator is especially prone to taking shortcuts and overriding the safety features.

To encourage preventative maintenance and in response to customer requests we have now appointed a field service technician who will be based in Gauteng. His training will start next week. Rosetta Hendricks has been phoning clients to suggest inspections as experience suggests that on-site maintenance needs to be checked by a Barpro trained technician on at least an annual basis. Otherwise, the pressures of business lead to the repairs either not being done or not being done correctly.

Regular inspections on the mobile racking mean lower long term maintenance costs and a far longer economic life for the system itself. If this is not a sufficient reason to do maintenance inspections, then Health and Safety considerations should be, as damage to bases and racking constitutes a threat to the safety of employees.

If you want to find out quickly if your Storax mobiles are being properly looked after, ask the following questions.

1.Do I know where the Storax handbook is kept?
2. Have the current operators attended a Barpro training course?
3. Is the preventative maintenance schedule in the handbook being followed?

If the answer to any of the above is no, then you can be pretty sure that your system needs attention.
Please call Rosetta Hendricks to book a service inspection. (021) 552 – 9190

It is now three years after the Barpro monthly newsletter started, and we have been kicking around the idea in house that we need to find ways to interact more with our customers.

Gary, Meloney, Demas, Mark, James, Ayanda, Carol, Mike, Mervin, Danie, Jarene, Christina, Danie, Rosie, Cindy, Neil, Gideon

Obviously we want to know when someone is unhappy with our performance as well as when we do something right. This gives us a chance to rectify a mistake or bad service and to congratulate employees who perform well.

But generally, there has been an immense amount of change in the warehousing industry and cold storage in particular. Warehouse and cold store managers can feel isolated and don’t know where to go for advice. For this reason the Barpro newsletters have not concentrated purely on mobiles, but looked at other developments and ideas as they come along. One example of this was Ice Melt, which I originally saw in a Melbourne cold store. After featuring it in a newsletter, we suddenly had inquiries from Malaysia. The article had been picked up by the IARW (International Association of Refrigerated Warehouses) newsletter and broadcast to its members as well. So the cold storage world has become a small place and problems shared can be problems solved.

The result of all this thinking was the decision to start a blog in addition to the monthly newsletter. It is there for you to use. By all means use it to criticise any bad service you might be unlucky enough to get from us at Barpro. We can use criticism to improve. But also use it to share a problem. You may find that you are not the only one sitting in the same boat and maybe someone out there will have a solution. I haven’t put any restrictions on input but would prefer that it deals with warehousing or cold storage problems and ideas. Energy management, forklift driving, rack safety, health and safety generally, even cold store clothing and situations vacant. Let see what happens.
